Gilman Scholarship

The Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau. The aim of the scholarship is to broaden the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints.

In order to be eligible to apply for the Gilman Scholarship, students must be a U.S. citizen, be in good academic standing, and meet the following criteria:

1) Be receiving the Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving the Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of his/her study abroad program
2) Is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student's home school
3) Be studying abroad on a program that is at least 28 days long
4) Be studying abroad in any country except Cuba or any country that is on the U.S. State Department Travel Warning List

Application Procedure

Students must create an account using the Gilman web site and complete an online application. In the application, students must write a Statement of Purpose and create a Follow-Up Project as to how they will promote study abroad and the Gilman Scholarship on their home campus if they are awarded. A Project Proposal must be included in the Gilman Application. The Follow-Up Project must then be completed within six months of the students return from their study abroad program. There are examples of Follow-Up Projects on the Gilman web site at www.iie.org/gilman.

Application Deadlines-Semester and Summer

The online application for Spring 2012 study abroad programs will open in mid-August. The Spring 2012 Application Deadline will be 11:59pm on October 4, 2011.

Scholarship Awards

Students can be awarded UP TO $5000 to study abroad for a semester or summer, depending on a student's need. However, awards usually range between $3000 and $4000.
