Zoology in Colombia: Summer Study Abroad!

Program Dates:

  • June 25: First day of class
  • June 25-July 7: Lecture and lab classes will meet at Central Campus
  • July 4: Keys Marine Lab Trip at Long Key, Florida
  • July 8: Depart for Colombia
  • July 25: Return from Colombia
  • July 26-August 6: Lecture and lab classes continue at Central Campus
  • August 6: Final exam/last day of class

Courses Offered:

  • Zoology (ZOO 2010), 3 credit hours*
  • Zoology Lab (ZOO 2010L), 1 hour
  • BSC 2910: Directed Independent Research

*This course satisfies general education/science lab requirements

*Students must register for both the lecture and lab

*Program is open to both non-science and science majors

Program Description:

Students will gain experience with various groups of marine and terrestrial animals, while participating in the field research led by their professors. The tropical component of the course will be taught at a field site in Colombia and at the natural history museum of the Universidad de Antioquia in Medellin. The tropical component in Colombia and the trip to the Keys Marine Laboratory will be required of students participating in this course. Students will participate in field research on reptiles, amphibians, and insects at the El Almejal Reserve and Lodge. In addition to the academic activities, students will have the opportunity to engage in outdoor activities such as snorkeling, whale watching, hiking through rain forests and participating in cultural events.

Program Fees:

Approximately $2500 and includes lodging, airfare, land transportation, meals, excursions and insurance. Also includes costs associated with the trip to the Florida Keys.

***Does not include: BC tuition for the course and lab***

Housing:

While in Bahia de Solano, students will be staying in the El Almejal Reserve and Lodge . In Medellin, students will be staying at the Hostal Ram .

  • Visits to local Afro-Colombian Villages
  • Fiesta de la Virgen
  • Rooster Festival

Deposit Deadline:

A non-refundable $1000 deposit is due by February 21, 2012. Please make check payable to "Broward College."
