Sample Pathways
 
POLICE OFFICER / DEPUTY SHERIFF

Typical starting salary (Broward County):  low 40’s ($40,000 - $45,000) w/ excellent opportunities for overtime

Sample Pathway: Associate's or higher degree OR military service w/ some college credits OR related job experience such as 911 dispatcher or community service aide or corrections (jail/prison) officer. NOTE: Must have an excellent driving record, be person of good moral character. NOTE: In some parts of FL, (the more rural areas), stress on college degree is much, much less.
 
CORRECTIONS (JAIL/PRISON) OFFICER
Typical starting salary (Broward): high $30’s (around $38,000) w/ excellent opportunities for overtime.
Sample Pathway: Same as for police officer above, though the stress on a college education or related job experience is not as high.
 
CORRECTIONAL PROBATION OFFICER (State of Florida)

Typical starting salary: low to mid $30’s (around $33,000)

Sample Pathway: Bachelors degree (helpful if degree is in related area, such as criminal justice, social work or psychology) also helpful if there is related job experience.
 
SOCIAL WORKER / JUVENILE COUNSELOR
Typical starting salary: Same as above
Sample Pathway: (same as above) Bachelors degree (helpful if degree is in related area, such as criminal justice, social work or psychology) also helpful if there is related job experience.
 
FBI / DEA / SECRET SERVICE OR OTHER U.S. SPECIAL AGENT
Typical staring salary: mid to high $40’s (around $46,000), usually with good pay raises first few years and good opportunities for overtime.
Sample Pathway: bachelors or higher degree OR bachelors degree with law enforcement or military experience OR, for a few agencies, combination of college course work (though no earned degree) and law enforcement or military experience. NOTE: Knowledge of a second language is a definite plus in being hired, also may be required to work in different cities (ie: forced to move) during the first few years.
 
U.S. CUSTOMS INSPECTOR / U.S. IMMIGRATION (INS) INSPECTOR
Typical starting salary:  high $30’s (around $38,000), usually with decent pay raises and, in South Florida, superb opportunities to earn overtime.
Sample Pathway: Associate's degree or higher OR related job or military experience OR combination of college course work and related job experience.
 
COMMUNITY SERVICE AIDE / POLICE SERVICE AIDE / 911 DISPATCHER

Typical starting salary: mid to high $20’s (around $26,000)

Sample Pathway: High school or GED, though college course work is preferred, for community service aide / police service aide must have a good driving record, good reading and writing skills. 911 dispatcher should have good typing skills.
 
CRIME SCENE TECHNICIAN / FINGERPRINT TECHNICIAN

Typical starting salary: low $30’s (around ($32,000).

Sample Pathway: Special training, such as the BCC Crime Scene degree program or related work experience (ex: community service aide).
