Overview

Licensed Massage Therapists are health care professionals licensed by the state of Florida to administer massage for compensation to patient/clients directly or by physician’s prescription. “Massage” means the manipulation of the soft tissues of the human body with the hand, foot, arm, or elbow; whether or not such manipulation is aided by hydrotherapy including colonic irrigation, or thermal therapy; any electrical or mechanical device; or the application to the human body of a chemical or herbal preparation. [Florida State Statutes Chapter 480.033(3)]

Employing knowledge of the patient/client’s condition, the massage therapist skillfully applies therapeutic and/or relaxing techniques and modalities to alleviate presenting symptoms.

  • A general assessment is made of the patient/client’s condition by an interview, palpation, observation, and consultation with other health care providers. Assessment is needed to determine treatment goals, contraindications, and the need for referral to other health care professionals. Therapists can give an estimated duration of treatment or opinion regarding the client’s progress.
  • Therapists can use physical agent modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and iontophoresis.
  • Therapists can also treat with the therapeutic use of water in its three forms as a pack, douche, bath, or shower.
  • To augment the therapeutic treatment therapists also use light, sound, and essential oils.

Massage therapy has a wide variety of applications, including preventative health care, health maintenance, rehabilitation, stress management, performance optimization and personal growth/development. Massage therapy provides a much-needed health care service to people from all walks of life in today’s high-stress culture. An integral part of the national interest in wellness and alternative medicine, massage therapy is one of the most rapidly growing health care professions in the country.

PERSONALLY SPEAKING

A massage therapist uses an integrative approach to unlock the potential to heal on all levels-physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual-as he/she works directly with the physical body. Massage therapists have an interest in natural healing, a readiness to take a positive step in their lives, a quest for more rewarding and meaningful work, a desire to be of service to their communities, a sense of caring for others, and a commitment to the time, energy, and focus necessary for professional development and ethical patient/client centered practice of the art of massage therapy.
