Broward College to Host 25th Annual wRites of Spring Literary Festival

Broward College’s wRites of Spring Literary Festival will return on Tuesday, March 18 through Thursday, March 20.  The event, which will be held at Broward College’s North Campus, 1000 Coconut Creek Blvd., Coconut Creek, will host two keynote speakers, including internationally acclaimed novelist Marlon James, author of “The Book Night of Women,” and popular writer, playwright and social activist Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, author of “Weep Not, Child.” In addition to the keynote presentations, the festival will include student presentations focusing on the theme “Legacies of Resistance,” author readings, lectures and a film screening. The events, which are free and open to the public, include:

Movie Night at the OMNI and Student Discussion Panel

“The First Grader” is the true story of an 84 year-old Kenyan villager and ex Mau Mau freedom fighter who fights for his right to go to school for the first time to get the education he could never afford.
Following the film, Broward College students will participate in a panel discussion.

Award winning author Marlon James will read from his novel “The Book of Night Women,” which tells the story of Lilith, a woman born into slavery on a Jamaican sugar plantation at the end of the eighteenth century.

Writer, playwright and social activist Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o will read from his award winning novel “Weep Not, Child,” a powerful and moving story that details the effects of the infamous Mau Mau war.
