The Broward College Greene International Education
Institute has announced the 32nd and 33rd recipients of the William E.
Greene (WEG) Scholarship for Semester Study Abroad for the Fall 2014
term: Sophie Hazza and Tiffany Power. This full scholarship is awarded
each semester to Broward students studying at one of Broward’s
international centers in Ecuador, Peru, or Spain and covers airfare,
housing, tuition, program fees, visas, and student travel insurance.
Sophie is a hospitality major who will be studying abroad this fall at the International College of Seville in Spain. Having just returned from living in Costa Rica, where she had firsthand experience serving in the hospitality field as well as volunteer experience at the Jaguar Centre, Sophie’s passion for international travel and cultural experience is evident. Professors highlighted her “continuous attitude and perseverance” and her “desire for high academic achievement.” Sophie’s mother was born in England, her father in Kuwait, and her brother in Spain. She plans use the “travel bug in her DNA” and her love for photography to create a presentation to promote study abroad to students from her high school as well as Broward classmates upon her return.
Tiffany, a future dentist, will be studying abroad in Lima, Peru at the Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola this fall. She aspires to serve the Latin American population in South Florida and also to be a member of Dentists Without Borders. She is eager to experience new cultures, increase her language skills, and try the delicious Peruvian cuisine. Tiffany's professors highlighted her extraordinary writing ability in which she expresses topics "succinctly and poetically" and her ability to be an "excellent ambassador for Broward College." Tiffany's go-with-the-flow nature and enthusiasm for new experiences will only be amplified upon her participation in the program. Whatever she learns in Lima will undoubtedly benefit the various organizations she volunteers for here in South Florida as well as her future patients.
