Requirements

Admission Requirements:


Broward College offers a comprehensive, high quality Nursing Program that is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing. The Nursing Program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission Inc. (NLNAC). Information can also be accessed at www.nlnac.org.

The Associate in Science Degree in Nursing is designed to prepare individuals for a career as a registered nurse. The program's mission is to prepare competent, compassionate, and culturally sensitive entry-level nursing graduates whose professional practice encompasses legal and ethical decision-making in the promotion of health in the community.

The student who meets all educational and institutional requirements for an Associate in Science Degree in Nursing from Broward College is eligible to have his/her name submitted to the Florida Board of Nursing to be considered as a candidate for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). The Florida Board of Nursing is the state agency authorized to determine if the applicant qualifies to take the NCLEX-RN for licensure as a registered nurse. For licensure requirements, refer to sections 464.008 and 464.009, Florida Statutes (F. S.), Rules 64B9-3.002 and 3.008, Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.)

All Broward College Nursing Students (including those seeking admission, readmission, and continuously enrolled) shall adhere to the most recent Nursing Program Polices adopted.

Criteria for Admission to the Nursing Program

Before submitting an application to the nursing program the student must:

* Complete all nursing pre-requisite courses with a “C” or better and a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5. The pre-requisites courses are listed below. Students applying for the LPN-RN Transition Option must hold a current Florida LPN License without restrictions.

 

Eligibility for admission into the nursing program will be dependent upon the following:

* Ability to meet the Performance Standards for the Nursing Program. In order to insure the safety of both the student and the patient(s) under their care, students must be able to meet Performance Standards to enter and remain in the program. A copy of the Performance Standards for the Nursing Program can be obtained from the Nursing Program web page.
* HCP0130 (Health Care Career Course) 75.0 Contact Hours. The student may be eligible for a waiver, contact Health Science Admissions for more information.
* Satisfactory Criminal Background Check and Drug Screening.

 

The following must be submitted to the Nursing Department on the campus where the student will be attending nursing courses prior the nursing orientation:

* Completion of a Medical History and Physical Examination prior to the start of the first nursing course. Admission into the Nursing Program is provisionally based upon acceptance of the approved health evaluation record. This health evaluation record must be submitted no later than the orientation day for nursing students.
* BLS-Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (CAE0299). The curriculum must be approved by the American Heart Association 8 Contact Hours
* Certification required in the following:

o CAE0382 - AIDS <4 contact hours>
o CAE0476 -TB/OSHA <6 contact hours>
o CAE0299 - CPR <8 contact hours>
o CAE0474 - Domestic Violence <2 contact hours>
o CAE0528 - Prevention of Medical Errors <2 contact hours>

Prerequisite Courses

Nursing prerequisites courses must be completed prior to submitting a Nursing Application with a minimum 2.5 grade point average:

* ENC1101 (English Composition I)
* CHM 1032 (Chemistry for Health Science)
* BSC1085 & BSC 1085L (Human Anatomy & Physiology I and Lab)
* BSC 1086 & BSC 1086L (Human Anatomy & Physiology II and Lab)


HCP0130 (Health Career Core).The student must submit documentation of successful completion of this course at the time of the application. Students may be eligible for a waiver if they have a current Florida or national license in another direct patient-care, health care profession. (This course is not calculated in the grade point average)

Applicants


Broward College is committed to serving as many qualified students as possible and respects your need to have "date certain" information. Prospective students will apply during a published specified period of time and will be notified through their Broward College email if they are being offered a seat within thirty days of the close of the application period for this limited access program. Applicants will be seated based on space availability, points earned, and successful completion of all requirements. Applicants for classes in the nursing program must meet the criteria below.

1. A minimum 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA) in the following 14 credit hours of prerequisite courses:
1. ENC1101 (3 credit hours)
2. CHM 1032 (3 credit hours)
3. BSC1085 (3 credit hours)
4. BSC1085L (1 credit hour)
5. BSC1086 (3 credit hours)
6. BSC1086L (1 credit hour)
2. HCP0130 (Health Career Core).The student must submit documentation of successful completion of this course at the time of the application. Students may be eligible for a waiver if they have a current Florida or national license in another direct patient-care, health care profession. 3. Satisfactory completion of certifications prior to starting the Nursing program.
CAE0382 - AIDS <4 contact hours>, CAE0476 -TB/OSHA <6 contact hours>, CAE0299 - CPR <8 contact hours>, CAE0474 - Domestic Violence <2 contact hours>, CAE0528 - Prevention of Medical Errors <2 contact hours>.
(These courses are not calculated in the grade point average).

4. Completion of a satisfactory drug screening and a Level II FBI background check. Students who are offered a seat will be provided the specific forms and procedures for completing the drug screening and background check, by invitation only, during a required preadmission session. An unsatisfactory Level II FBI background check and/or drug screen may delay the admission process and lead to ineligibility for the nursing program.
5. A current Florida Practical Nurse License (LPN), without restriction, is required for the LPN-RN transition option. (Note: This requirement relates only to the LPN-RN transition option applicants).

Admissions will be awarded to those with the most earned points. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

The college reserves the right to change any of the rules and regulations of the Health Science Departments at any time, including those related to admission, instruction, and graduation. All such changes are effective at such time as the proper authorities determine, and may apply not only to prospective students, but also to those who already are enrolled in a Health Science Program. All enrolled students will be notified in writing of such changes as they occur.

Previous Nursing Course Failures: Students with previous nursing courses, regardless whether successful or unsuccessful, should contact an Associate Dean for Nursing to determine eligibility.

The nursing student or applicant who has not been enrolled in a nursing theory or clinic course for two years or more and is otherwise eligible to return/enroll in the nursing program, will be required to successfully complete a PN program and hold a current/active Florida license (LPN), prior to requesting re-entry into the Nursing Program.

Nursing applicants with eight or more total credit hours of nursing course failures, regardless if taken at Broward College or from another nursing program are not eligible for admission into the Broward College Nursing Program.


Admission Criteria And Procedures
For the Associate in Science Degree in Nursing Point System

Point System:
Grade Point Average Requirement: In order to apply for admissions to the college’s nursing programs, prospective students must meet the minimum grade point average requirements. Nursing shall require a minimum grade point average of 2.5 in all college level nursing prerequisite courses. There are sixteen (16) possible points that may be awarded for the G.P.A. in the nursing prerequisite courses.

o 2.5 = 1 point
o 2.6 = 2 points
o 2.7 = 3 points
o 2.8 = 4 points
o 2.9 = 5 points
o 3.0 = 6 points
o 3.1 = 7 points
o 3.2 = 8 points
o 3.3 = 9 points
o 3.4 = 10 points
o 3.5 = 11 points
o 3.6 = 12 points
o 3.7 = 13 points
o 3.8 = 14 points
o 3.9 = 15 points
o 4.0 = 16 points
* There is one (1) possible point that can be earned for Broward county residents. Residency for the purpose of earning this point will be based strictly on students' addresses and not college residency requirements for paying in-state fees. Points will not be awarded if a post office box number is provided.
* Under the articulation agreement for Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), the students will be awarded five (5) points for those students meeting the HOSA requirements. The five points will be granted during the admission selection process. All admission requirements must be satisfied to receive the points.
* Highest total points will constitute an offer for admission based on seat availability.
* In the event of a tie, students will be given one (1) point for the completion of each college-level, general education course that is required toward the Associate in Science Degree for the Nursing Program. In the event that a tie remains, the point will be awarded to the student with the highest grades in the required courses.

General Education courses completed prior to admission may be used to assign points in the event there is a tie for a seat.

* Social and Behavioral Science course (see catalog for listing)
* MCB2013 & Lab (Microbiology and Lab)

Pre-Admission Sessions: Students selected for admission will be required to attend a pre-admission session. Students who do not attend will forfeit their seat.

Pre-Admission Acceptance/Delineation: Students will be required to accept or decline the offered seat, in writing, during the pre-admission session. Students who accept seats and fail to occupy them during the approved term shall forfeit the seat and must reapply. If a student declines their admission seat and wishes to enter at another time, they are required to re-submit their application.
