Staff Positions

It's important to think of P'an Ku as a team. All members are important, and the team would not be successful without all of the members working together. Having said that, there are some positions for which I have more expectations. The college has allocated certain funds for some of these positions, which they call stipends. Aside from the duties of the position within the magazine, there are some expectations the college has for anyone who receives a stipend, which may include serving on a college committee. Stipends are generally given at the end of the semester, once it has been determined that the expectations have been met. Please note this: though students from any campus or center may be a member of the magazine staff, it is necessary that you be able to travel to South Campus for meetings and to work on the magazine. That goes for the editor positions, too. I expect them to travel to other campuses on behalf of the magazine. Going back to the team concept mentioned above, you can't be on the baseball team, for example, if you can't go to and play in the games. Of course, work may be submitted to the magazine from any campus or center by any student. It isn't necessary to be a member of the staff, nor does it increase one's chances of getting work in the magazine despite what some misinformed people might think.

Positions and Responsibilities (Stipend Positions)

Editor-in-Chief. The editor is responsible for the overall operation and success of the magazine. The editor will call and run staff meetings on a regular basis. The editor will communicate and meet with the faculty advisor on a regular basis. The editor will communicate with faculty, student life, and other students on a collegewide basis, by sending emails, attending cookouts or club rush activities, and will oversee the creation and distribution of flyers soliciting work for the magazine. The editor may at times visit classes on the various campuses to solicit work and recruit staff members. The editor will also coordinate the activities of the campus liaisons and the other editors. The editor will oversee the pre and post production process of the magazine. The editor must be well-organized and possess good communication skills. The editor will also be expected to serve on either a collegewide or campus committee.

Design and Layout Editor. This person will, under the direction of the editor, be responsible for the design and layout of the magazine. This editor should be familiar with principles of design and have a general knowledge of specific software in the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator), working in a Mac environment. This, of course, will also be a learning experience, under the direction of the faculty advisor. This person should be well-organized and be able to work well with others and help the staff visualize ideas for design and layout. The editor will also be expected to serve on a collegewide or campus committee.

Literary Editor. This person will be mainly responsible for soliciting and obtaining poetry and prose submissions for the magazine. A love of literature should be the main prerequisite for this position. This editor will find ways to let writers know about the magazine and to obtain as many submissions as possible of quality work. Creating and displaying flyers on the various campuses and centers is one way. Communicating with creative writing faculty and students is another way. This may include emails and actually visiting classes. If there are any writers groups on the various campuses, this person should make every effort to attend their meetings. This person will also be responsible for planning and conducting at least one P'an Ku Outloud reading on South Campus during the semester. This will be coordinated with Student Life. If there are other literary events on other campuses, this person may also be part of those. The final selection process is done by the entire staff, but the more work that is obtained, the better are the chances of having quality work to choose from. This editor will also be expected to serve on a collegewide or campus committee.

Art Editor. This person will be mainly responsible for soliciting and obtaining artwork submissions for the magazine. Working in or having a love of art should be the main prerequisites here. This person will visit the various campus art departments, create and distribute flyers, and try to obtain a wide variety of submissions in a variety of styles and media. This person needs to be in communication with the graphic design program at the WHC and the student graphic design club. Students should be made aware of the ways and formats in which they can submit their work. If necessary, this person will collect work and bring it to South Campus, ensuring its safety. If there are active art clubs, this editor should be in touch with their officers to make members aware of the magazine. The final selection process is done by the entire staff, but the more work that is obtained, the better are the chances of having quality work to choose from. This editor will also be expected to serve on a collegewide or campus committee.

Photography Editor. This person will be mainly responsible for soliciting and obtaining photography submissions for the magazine. Being a photographer or having a love of photography are main prerequisites. This person will visit the various campus art departments and photo labs and studios and communicate with the photography professors and students. This person will create and distribute flyers on the various campuses and centers. The students and faculty should be made aware of the various types of photographs, color and black and white, as well as formats, print and digital, that may be submitted. Any motifs or themes should also be communicated to the faculty and students. If necessary, this person will collect work and bring it to South Campus. The final selection process is done by the entire staff, but the more work that is obtained, the better are the chances of having quality work to choose from. This editor is expected to serve on a collegewide or campus committee.

Campus Liaison (North and Central). The campus liaison will work along with the editor-in-chief and the other editors to accomplish the goals of the magazine to ensure that the magazine receives full exposure on the campuses. The liaison will be sure copies of the magazine are available on the campus as long as the supply lasts. The liaisons will be sure flyers are posted and current and that submission forms are available in the art and English departments, as well as Student Life. The campus liaisons will work closely with Student Life to be sure other clubs are aware of the magazine and may coordinate activities with those clubs, such as writing contests or literary events. If needed, the liaisons will collect work and bring it to South Campus, making sure the various members are aware of submission deadlines. This may also entail visiting various art, photography, and English classes. The liaison is expected to serve on a campus or Student Life committee.
