Using the very latest in distance learning technology, our innovative two-year program offers students a highly stimulating learning environment from which to launch a successful career in physical therapy. Dedicated to developing assistants who are quality-minded and determined to make new contributions to the physical therapy field, the BC curriculum cultivates competency in technical skills through planned experiences in the classroom, laboratory, and off-site clinical facilities.
Our program features:
- Real-time, two-way audio and video interaction with a physical therapist assistant class at Edison State College (ESC) in Fort Myers, Florida.
- Laboratory sessions and clinical experiences that provide students with the opportunity to practice with the latest equipment and to perform the most current types of interventions.
- Accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). The current accreditation period extends through to 2014.
Graduates who consistently exceed the national and state average pass rate on the licensure examination for physical therapist assistants. Under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist, Physical Therapist Assistants work closely with patients disabled by illness, accident or congenital handicaps to help carry out their prescribed rehabilitation and plan of care.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Administering physical agents to alleviate the patient's presenting symptoms.
- Instructing the patient in specialized therapeutic exercise programs designed to restore functional abilities.
- Directing the patient on the use and care of artificial limbs, braces, crutches, walkers, wheelchairs and other devices.
- Recording information on patient interventions/progress and reporting the findings to the physical therapist.
Preventing the progression of disease and helping to maintain and restore quality of life in people with a range of physical problems is fulfilling work. Physical therapy is an active and progressive occupation that will constantly put you in touch with new people, technology and treatment methods.
Broward College's innovative program will challenge and train you to excel in this ever-evolving, always demanding field.
