IS BROWARD COLLEGE AN ACCREDITED INSTITUTION? Yes, On July 1, 2008, The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges (SACS) approved Broward College to offer the Bachelor of Science Degree (B.S.) Program in Teacher Education.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “B.A.” AND “B.S.” DEGREE? A Bachelor's of Arts (B.A) degree is a humanities based degree. It is designed to provide a balanced liberal arts education and general knowledge in a recognized discipline, interdisciplinary field, or areas of professional study. A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree is science based. It is designed to provide a balanced liberal arts education and a scientific, technical, or professional entry level competence.
WHEN WILL THE COURSES FOR THE NEW DEGREE PROGRAMS BEGIN? All pre-professional educators in the BS Program will need to take a “uniform core of courses”. These courses are scheduled to begin in January 2009.
WHEN WILL BC START ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS INTO THE PROGRAM? The Teacher Education Programs will begin accepting applications on September 15th. The application will be in hard copy at all BC campuses registration offices. It will be also be available at the Broward website, www.broward.edu/education. The deadline for the January 2009 semester will be December 3, 2008. Students new to Broward College must complete the standard BC application and will be assessed a $35 fee. Students who graduated from BC and have been absent for two semesters or more need to complete a Broward Re-Entry Application form; there is no additional charge.
WHEN WILL STUDENTS BE ABLE TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES? The Teacher Education Programs follow the same calendar as the rest of Broward College. Winter registration begins October 31st.
IS FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE? Yes. The Broward Teacher Education Program is an eligible institution. In addition, we are diligently seeking scholarships and other grants to help students financially.
IS FIELD PLACEMENT REQUIRED? Yes. Pre-professional Educators will have to conduct many hours of both guided and structured field placement in a variety of school settings. Additionally, a 40-hour practicum and a 10-12 week internship must be successfully completed.
