As students return for the fall term in August, and as we approach cooler weather in October, flu season will be with us. Of particular concern is the H1N1 Swine Flu virus, which the World Health Organization has now declared a pandemic. While a pandemic defines the number of cases of the flu, not the severity of the cases, it is important to take note of how quickly the virus can spread. This communication is a reminder of what precautions we should take at the college to prevent the spread of the flu. These recommendations come from the Office of the Florida Surgeon General. The first precaution is a very important one: if you have a respiratory illness including the flu, please stay home from the college. For those employees that are worried about sick leave time, or are so new to the college they haven’t accrued time, please call Human Resources and they will assist you on a case-by-case basis. Faculty members may want to take a look at their attendance policies should the flu make a significant difference in attendance in their classes.
