With the 2009 World Series now history, a first-year baseball series that Broward College hopes to make an annual tradition – continues Friday.
Game 2 of the Broward Baseball Fall Classic will take place beginning at 6 p.m. on November 6 at the baseball complex at the northwestern corner the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus. Game 2 had originally been scheduled for Thursday evening, but Wednesday night’s heavy rain made the field unplayable. If the teams are tied after Friday’s game, a tiebreaker will be held immediately after the conclusion of the game.
Serving as honorary head coaches for inaugural Fall Classic are Sean Guerin, chair of the Broward College District Board of Trustees and Paul Tanner, a member of the Broward College District Board of Trustees and its immediate past chair. In the Fall Series format, the team’s fall roster was split into blue and gray teams to vie for the title in a best-of-three intra-squad series.
The teams play seven-inning games using American League rules, which include the use of a designated hitter. Standard substitution rules apply.
In Game 1, played Tuesday evening, Coach Tanner’s gray squad took the lead with two runs in the first and exploded with a five-run outburst in the third inning and four more in the seventh en route to a 13-4 victory. The gray squad’s pitching and defense held Coach Guerin’s blue team to a four-hitter. The blue team scored single runs in the first and fourth innings and added two more in the seventh.
The series adds a competitive touch to the Seahawks’ fall and winter training as they work toward the spring season, which officially starts February 1 against the State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota Manatees. Last year’s Seahawks earned state and national rankings and finished with a 32-14 record.
At the end of the series, the honorary head coaches will select a most valuable player.
There is no charge to attend and the public is invited. Ample free parking is available adjacent to the baseball complex.
