Be the Guiding Light in a New Student’s Life
 
If you’re already enrolled as a Broward College student, consider becoming a Peer Mentor to new students. As a Peer Advocate, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Develop your leadership skills
  •  Make a lasting impression on new friends’ lives
  • Show other students the tips that helped you achieve success

Why Should I Become a Peer Advocate?

​As a Peer Advocate, you will assist first-year college students to develop the skills necessary for academic success. You will do this by:

  • Making it easier for students to interact with faculty and staff
  • Helping new students discover various college activities
  • Getting students familiar with Broward College resources
  • Providing a positive support system and influence
  • Building your mentees’ self-confidence
Who is Eligible to be a Peer Advocate?

Anyone who is currently enrolled at Broward College can be a Peer Advocate. Eligibility is based on:

  1. Full-time enrollment
  2. Completion of at least 12 college-level credit hours
  3. Minimum GPA of 2.75 or 3.25 if you’re an Honors student
    Completed application form
  4. One letter of recommendation from a teacher, supervisor or minister
    Completion of a mentor contract
  5. Completion of mentor training
  6. Attendance at a peer mentee orientation
Is There Compensation?

Yes! Peer Advocate are compensated with a $650 scholarship per term. In order to satisfy the scholarship requirements, you must:

  • Complete a minimum of 60 hours of Peer Advocate duties each term.
  • Spend 15 of the 60 hours with a mentee
Additional hours can be met by attending:
  • One mandatory training session
  • A mandatory orientation session
  • An end-of-term recognition event
  • Monthly Peer Advocate staff meetings
  • Other recommended college events
  • Meetings with a Student Success Coordinator to gauge your mentees’ progress
Lead Peer Advocates are eligible for work study.
What Will My Responsibilities Be?

Your responsibilities as a Peer Advocate include:

  • Mentor three students per term (accurate?)
  • Meet with each mentee once per week
  • Make additional contact with each mentee by telephone, e-mail, text message or social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.)
  • Attend required meetings and group activities with mentees twice per month
  • Document all contacts made with each mentee in the mentoring log
  • Meet with Student Success Coordinator regarding mentees’ progress as needed
  • Familiarize mentees with the college’s web page and other systems
  • Help mentees set goals
  • Assist students with online registration
  • Familiarize mentees with the “Finish What You Start” Program (still going on?) Attend other one-on-one campus activities with each mentee once per month (see a play, visit an art display, listen to a guest speaker, etc.)
