No. The College is not asking anyone to quit. The policy means that no one can use tobacco products on Broward College campuses. To alleviate common carvings and to feel more comfortable while on campus students and employees will have access to on site cessation programs that offer nicotine replacement products.
Yes. As of January 1, 2015, 1014 other colleges and universities have gone 100% tobacco free.
The goal is to make Broward College a healthy place to work and learn. Designated areas don’t support the goal of the policy: to promote a healthy environment.
Smokeless tobacco products are harmful and not safe alternatives to smoking. All tobacco users face health related injuries and preventable diseases (i.e. oral cancers). The use of tobacco products leads to premature death and chronic, debilitating disease, and Broward College is committed to creating a healthier College and community.
The policy is enforced like any other student conduct/employee regulation violation. You will be notified of your offense and asked to comply with the new policy. Failure to comply with the policy can result in disciplinary action and up to/including termination for employees.
Broward College believes compliance is everyone’s business. If you feel comfortable doing so you can approach the violator in a kind and compassionate way letting them know that the college has a new tobacco free policy and that tobacco use is prohibited on campus. If you are not comfortable approaching the violator, you can anonymously report the violation on line by using our violations reporting page. Please include as many details about the violation as possible to allow our Tobacco Free Ambassadors to in areas where violations are occurring so they can help to notify violators of the new policy.
Broward College working with AHEC, will provide on campus cessation classes free of charge to students and staff. Tobacco cessation products (nicotine patch and/or gum) will be available through these programs. A list of off campus cessation programs are listed on our resources page. Employees on the CIGNA health plan can access tobacco cessation programs that include tobacco cessation products.
