On March 29, 2019, The Broward College District Board of Trustees formally installed Gregory Adam Haile, J.D., as the seventh president of the College during an investiture ceremony. Following a national search, his selection was announced by the Board on May 8, 2018, and President Haile assumed his role on July 1, 2018.
Rich in tradition and protocol, an investiture is the "formal ceremony of conferring the authority and symbols of high office". Originating in English universities and modeled after highly dignified knighthood services, the Investiture Ceremony is among the oldest traditions in academia in which colleges and universities welcome a new era and celebrate the pursuit of knowledge.
The transference of a college president's authority is a rare and solemn event with many academic traditions and protocols including a procession featuring the institution's faculty joined by delegates from other colleges and universities, each donning the colorful academic regalia representing their schools. The event is interspersed with musical selections, greetings from members of the college, the higher education community, community partners, and government leaders.
Gregory Adam Haile, Esq., is the seventh president of Broward College. Before his appointment in July 2018, President Haile served as General Counsel and Vice President for Public Policy and Government Affairs from September 2011 to June 2018.
A career public servant, community leader, and accomplished educator, President Haile has served on over 35 boards and committees. Among his current roles, President Haile is on the board of Leadership Florida and a member of the Higher Education Committee of 50, a group of forward-thinking campus leaders supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The recipient of numerous awards for his influence and commitment to the community, President Haile has been recognized as a prominent South Floridian by Gold Coast Magazine.
As an educator, President Haile has taught at Harvard University and Miami-Dade College and as an adjunct professor at Broward College.
During his tenure at Broward, President Haile managed daily regulatory challenges including oversight of broad-ranging legal issues related to tax, immigration, employment, labor, copyright, real estate, construction, tenure, and FERPA. As counsel for every aspect of Broward College operations, he advocated on behalf of higher education before local, state, and national leadership including the Florida state legislature and the executive branch in addition to the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. Prior to joining the Broward College leadership team, President Haile had a successful career as a corporate litigator.
He received his Juris Doctorate from Columbia University School of Law, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, editor-in-chief of the National Black Law Journal, and editor of the Journal on Gender and Law. He received his bachelor's degree from Arizona State University, where he graduated magna cum laude and was selected from among more than 13,000 students to receive the Most Outstanding Graduate award. He also completed a fellowship at Vanderbilt University Higher Education Management Institute.
President Haile is married with two children.
The Presidential Medallion bearing the seal of the Office of the President of Broward College is worn on formal occasions, such as commencement and inaugurations. The year 1959, which indicates when Broward College was founded, is inscribed in the bronze medallion.
The Presidential Investiture Committee plans and implements activities related to the event including supporting efforts to attract external funding for underwriting costs not covered by Broward College.
