To My Fellow Seahawks and Supporters of Broward College:
The summer term continues, but Broward College is gearing up for fall and the arrival of new Seahawks. I’m excited to welcome those new students who have chosen to start their future at Broward College. But I’m just as excited to welcome back our returning students who are working hard on transforming their vision into a successful career.
One thing I've been doing this summer is engaging with the Seahawk community directly through a series of public meetings with faculty, staff, and most recently, students. There's so much to be gained when I hear directly from our stakeholders. I have enjoyed each townhall, as I have committed to engage all constituencies each semester, when feasible. We are all partners on this vision to make Broward College the number one destination for academic excellence, so I'm always eager to hear constructive suggestions.
An important part of that mission is recognizing and rewarding the impact that our dedicated, high performing employees have every day. I'm thankful to our District Board of Trustees for approving salary increases and a one-time payment for all non-instructional Full-Time Regular/Temporary Administrators and Professional Technical Staff (PTS) employees for the 2025-2026 fiscal year, along with compensation increases for adjunct faculty. I've also tasked our Vice-President of Talent and Culture to share a total rewards summary for all employees, so that you have a full picture of the benefits and value of working at Broward College.
I have a few items from around the College to highlight:
The fall term is right around the corner, and I can’t wait to see students, faculty and staff across all our campuses.
As always, please feel free to contact me directly at officeofthepresident@broward.edu.
Go Seahawks!
Torey Alston
President and CEO
The Broward College District Board of Trustees did not meet in July and will have its next regular meeting on Aug. 26. Here are a few upcoming meetings of note:
This month’s student spotlight focuses on Kevin Romero, who recently graduated as part of the Class of 2025.
Where are you from?
Born and raised in Hollywood, FL.
What’s your major?
I would love to double major in Psychology and Public Policy.
What advice would you give to incoming students?
My advice to incoming students is this: “Querer es poder” — if there is a will, there is always a way. Just finishing my first year at Broward College, I’ve had amazing opportunities that no first-year student would have ever thought possible. From holding office positions in Central Campus’s Phi Theta Kappa Mu Mu Chapter, to hosting the PSG: End the Demand 5K Awareness Walk during National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, to speaking to the Board of Trustees as one of eight student representatives — you have the ability to do the impossible.
My suggestion? Always take initiative.
What is the best part about being a BC student?
The best part about being a BC student is having the opportunity to meet individuals from all walks of life. I’ve had the honor of meeting mothers pursuing nursing degrees to become the first nurses in their families, international students living alone and working three jobs while their families cheer them on from thousands of miles away, and high school students from College Academy striving to earn not only their high school diplomas but also their Associate of Arts degrees.
What’s one important thing you learned outside the classroom while at BC?
One important lesson I’ve learned outside the classroom at BC is: learn when to say no. Although you might want to get involved in a multitude of clubs, take 15+ credits, and say yes to every opportunity because you are awesome and one of a kind — know when to say no. While it’s tempting to build an impressive résumé, it’s just as important to be reliable. Don’t finish a project halfway because you didn’t have the time. Be able to commit and be known as someone who follows through, because you are capable.
Learn to balance life and avoid burnout. And when you struggle to say no, that’s why your support systems are there. Don’t just let others believe in you — believe in yourself and what you are capable of.

This month’s faculty/staff spotlight focuses on Jasmine Mosley, a Campus Director with Student Life who has worked at Broward College for eight years.
What is the best part of working at Broward College?
What I love most about working at Broward College is the incredible opportunity to connect with students every single day. Whether it’s guiding them through leadership development, engaging them in vibrant campus programs, or helping them discover their sense of belonging, I find true joy in supporting their journey beyond the classroom. Being part of their college experience and witnessing their growth and confidence flourish is both inspiring and rewarding.
What is one thing you’ve accomplished working at Broward College that you’re most proud of?
One of my proudest accomplishments at Broward College has been leading a powerful collaboration with Florida Atlantic University to bring Dr. Yusef Salaam—one of the Exonerated Five (formerly known as the “Central Park 5”)—to campus. Dr. Salaam shared his deeply moving story of wrongful conviction, resilience, and ultimate exoneration, leaving a lasting impact on everyone in attendance. The event not only sparked meaningful dialogue around justice and perseverance but also gave our students a rare and unforgettable opportunity to meet Dr. Salaam in person and capture the moment with photos. It was a truly transformative experience that embodied the power of education, partnership, and student engagement.
Are you a morning person or a night owl – and why?
I’m a morning person—there’s something energizing about starting the day before the sun rises.
What is your favorite food?
Tacos! I like to keep it simple, meat and cheese only.
What would you do if you won the lottery?
If I won the lottery, one of my greatest joys would be retiring my amazing parents who have sacrificed so much for me. I would also proudly establish a scholarship fund dedicated to supporting students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

This month’s alumni spotlight focuses on Adrian Solorzano from the Class of 2023.
Adrian Solorzano’s journey is a powerful example of resilience, determination, and the impact of accessible education. Born in Venezuela and raised in South Florida, Solorzano faced financial and personal hardships early in life. Despite living with disabilities, he remained committed to supporting his family and changing the trajectory of his future.
That determination led him to Broward College, where he found an affordable, high-quality education with flexible options that met his needs. Solorzano credits the College with pivotal experiences and deeply supportive faculty, including his first instructor, Professor Bowen—affectionately known as “Teach”—whose patience and encouragement rekindled Solorzano’s love for math and science.
A turning point came when Solorzano was accepted into Broward College’s Bachelor of Applied Science in Supply Chain Management program, aligning his academic path with his natural curiosity and practical strengths. He says the College’s support extended beyond academics, offering empathy and flexibility during some of the most challenging periods of his life.
“They treated me like a person going through real struggles,” he said. “That made all the difference.”
Solorzano graduated cum laude with both an Associate of Arts and a Bachelor of Applied Science degree. He went on to earn multiple master’s degrees, including an MBA, an M.S. in Management and Leadership, and a Master of Healthcare Administration. His internships at Coastal Construction, the International Air Transport Association, and the Space Generation Advisory Council helped sharpen his skills in logistics, vendor coordination, and real-time problem-solving.
His passion for aerospace took flight through NASA’s L’SPACE Academy, where he contributed to real-world mission architecture and planetary exploration projects. He later completed an astrodynamics internship with STAR in India, deepening his expertise in orbital mechanics.
Today, Solorzano serves as an equipment coordinator at HCA Healthcare, managing supply chain operations in a fast-paced medical environment. His long-term goal is to bridge healthcare and aerospace through roles focused on human factors, systems engineering, and space medicine. He is currently pursuing his Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and plans to earn a Ph.D. in Human Factors Engineering from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Solorzano encourages current students to fully engage with the resources available at Broward College—from internships and student clubs to advising and mental health support.
“A degree from Broward College is not just a piece of paper,” he said. “It’s a launchpad for greater opportunities.”
