- TIMELY WARNING NOTICE -

Money Scam/Fraud

IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE JEANNE CLERY DISCLOSURE OF CAMPUS SECURITY POLICY AND CRIME STATISTICS ACT OF 1998, THIS BULLETIN IS POSTED TO ADVISE YOU OF AN INCIDENT THAT CONCERNS THE SAFETY OF THE COLLEGE COMMUNITY. PLEASE TAKE ALL NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS.

The Department of Safety, Security, & Emergency Preparedness would like to inform you of a reported scam/fraud that may be a risk to members of our college community. We are currently investigating reports of recent occurrences at Broward College. We are taking this opportunity to inform our community members of these incidents of fraudulent activities, so our community members can take the appropriate actions to protect themselves.

Incident Details:

  • The scammer(s) are offering students fraudulent checks for "Tuition Reimbursement" or other offers (i.e., jobs). The scammer(s) will prompt the victim to deposit the check into their personal account. The victim will then be told that they were given an amount higher than needed and will be asked to return the excess funds.
  • The scammer(s) motive is to get the victim to deposit the check and send back legitimate money before the bank realizes the deposited check is fraudulent.
  • The scammer(s) have approached victims in-person (on campus) and online via email accounts.
  • Once the scammer(s) has/have access to the person's bank account, the scammer(s) may attempt to deplete money from the account.

Prevention Tips:

  • Members of the College community are urged to avoid depositing checks into their bank accounts from individuals that they do not know.
  • If you unexpectantly receive a check from the college, please contact the respective department to confirm the validity of the check before depositing the funds into your bank account.
  • Always remember to safeguard all personal & financial information.
  • If someone approaches you and asks you to deposit checks into your bank account, please contact Campus Safety immediately at 954-201-HELP (4357) after refusing to do so.

Together we can protect ourselves and our community by reporting suspicious activity. Remember, if you See Something, Say Something. For further crime prevention and safety tips visit the Department of Safety, Security, and Emergency Preparedness website.
