Program Overview

The Broward College Work-Based Learning (WBL) Virtual Internship Program connects eligible Information Technology students with remote, project-based internship opportunities. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), this initiative bridges classroom learning and the tech industry's demands, equipping students with the real-world skills and professional confidence employers seek.

The Work-Based Learning Virtual Internship Program is designed to:

  • Provide meaningful, hands-on experience aligned with students’ fields of study.
  • Strengthen career readiness through the development of technical, professional, and workplace skills.
  • Help students build their resumes, professional portfolios, and industry connections.
  • Provide opportunities to apply classroom learning in real-world professional environments.

To be considered for the Work-Based Learning Virtual Internship Program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Enrollment: Be currently enrolled as a Broward College student.
  • Academic Standing: Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
  • Program Progress: Be enrolled in an eligible IT degree program and nearing completion.
  • Gateway Course: Have completed or be currently enrolled in the required gateway course for their degree path.
  • Experience: Have minimal or no prior professional experience in their intended IT career field.

The Work-Based Learning Virtual Internship Program provides a fully remote experience facilitated through the Virtual Internships platform, connecting Broward College students with host companies across the globe.

  • Format: 100% remote/virtual
  • Duration: 12 weeks
  • Time Commitment: 144 total internship hours (~12 hours per week)
  • Work Structure: Project-based assignments featuring regular check-ins, team collaboration, and ongoing professional feedback

Enhance your academic progress while gaining real-world experience:

  • Flexible Participation: Enrolling in the Internship EDGE Program for credit is optional and is not required to participate in the WBL Virtual Internship Program.
  • Earn College Credit: Eligible students can earn up to three academic credits through Broward College's Internship EDGE Program. Credit availability depends on your degree pathway and open elective requirements.

To complete the Work-Based Learning Virtual Internship Program, students must complete 144 internship hours, remain actively engaged with their host company, and fulfill all required program activities and professional development requirements. Students are expected to maintain consistent participation and meet the professional expectations established by Broward College and Virtual Internships.

The Broward College Work-Based Learning team supports students throughout their internship journey, from initial interest through successful program completion.

In addition to Broward College support, Virtual Internships provides specialized resources to ensure workplace success:

  • Career-Readiness Resources: Interactive modules focused on remote collaboration, communication, and time management.
  • Skill Building: Professional development activities designed to strengthen core workplace competencies.
  • Continuous Workplace Support: Dedicated assistance throughout the internship to help you meet host company expectations.

The Work-Based Learning team guides you through each stage of the application and placement process:

  1. Submit the Interest Form: Fill out the Work-Based Learning Virtual Internship Interest Form during the open recruitment period.
  2. Eligibility Review: The WBL team reviews your academic standing and program requirements.
  3. One-on-One Advising Meeting: Connect with the WBL team for a brief meeting to review expectations and next steps.
  4. Internship Preparation: Complete required career-readiness and onboarding activities to prepare for your placement.
  5. Virtual Internships Application: Complete an official profile on the Virtual Internships platform to begin company matching.
  6. Interview and Placement Approval: Interview with potential global host companies. Proposed projects are verified against your academic program before placement is finalized.

Students are matched with global host companies that offer meaningful, project-based internship experiences aligned with their specific field of study. Host companies provide professional guidance, real-world project assignments, and continuous feedback throughout the internship, offering students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a global professional environment.

Upon successfully fulfilling all program requirements, students receive both formal recognition and financial reward for their achievement:

  • Certificate of Completion: Official recognition certifying your remote IT internship experience.
  • End-of-Program Report: A personalized performance summary from Virtual Internships highlighting your project achievements and professional skill growth.
  • $500 Completion Stipend: Funded by the NSF grant, eligible students receive a $500 stipend upon verifying all 144 required internship hours, program activities, and final deliverables.
