During COVID-19, most clinical affiliates mandated vaccinations for all students attending clinical externships at off-campus sites. This was a clinical affiliate requirement and not a Broward College requirement, and declining the COVID19 vaccination prevented students from completing their program of study. At this time, clinical affiliates do not have mandatory COVID19 vaccination requirements. Clinical affiliates currently mandate the Flu vaccine and could reinstate the COVID19 vaccination requirements at any time and if so, students will be required to have the COVID19 vaccinate in order to attend clinical rotations, allowing them to progress in their program of study.
Are you interested in a career in healthcare but direct patient care is not for you? The AS degree in Health Services Management is designed for students who hope to work in the administrative areas of the healthcare field. Positions can be found in hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, pharmaceutical firms, and doctor's offices. Health Services Management professionals have little or no direct patient contact, but provide service "behind the scenes." The curriculum is intended to prepare students to enter the upper-division courses in a Health Services Administration program.
Health Service Managers may manage an entire facility, a specific clinical area or department, or a medical practice for a group of physicians. Medical and health services managers must adapt to changes in healthcare laws, regulations, and technology.
DUTIES
Medical and health services managers typically do the following:
The program covers a broad spectrum of medical, administrative, financial, and managerial knowledge to provide you with a diverse education that will prepare you for work in the healthcare management field.
With your degree, you could become qualified to work in any number of healthcare-related settings, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics, and public health organizations. Or, you could find employment working for the healthcare department of a local, state, or federal government agency.
International Students
International students have a limited number of online and blended courses they can take per semester and should fully understand the requirements before registering. It is recommended that international students review with their assigned advisor the Health Services Management program as well as their individual educational plan as several courses are only offered online and only offered during specific semesters. Failure to take courses in the appropriate order can impede an international student's ability to graduate in a timely manner. Online courses in the program include HIM2512, HIM2012, HIM1260, and HSC1531.
Recommendation for Health Services Management Practicum Internship
Prior to taking HSA2810, Practicum in Health Facility Administration in the last term, it is required that students work with their assigned academic advisor to finalize their internships. Students should begin to identify potential preceptors three to six months prior to the start of the practicum. A letter from the planned externship facility needs to be approved by the Health Services Management Associate Dean or (HSA2810) faculty before making the internship commitment. The letter must contain all associated activities of the internship. Please review the Health Services Management Practicum Fact Sheet For further information, please RSVP for a Virtual Information Session held monthly via Zoom.
Students are required to complete a background check and drug screening prior to taking the practicum in a healthcare facility. The cost of the background check and screenings are the responsibility of the student (through Complio, American Data Bank 1800-200-0853). Effective March 2, 2020, the Complio package can be ordered at www.browardcollegescreening.com. Some healthcare facilities may require additional screening prior to starting the internship. Any additional fees will be the responsibility of the student.

PRACTICUM EXPERIENCE
The Associate of Science Program in Health Services Management provides a practicum experience (HSA2810) that allows students to apply their knowledge and provides them with professional experience outside of the classroom that is consistent with their career goals. Scheduling is flexible and individualized in order to meet the needs of both the student and the organization providing the practicum experience. Students should be aware that the practicum experience will require 16 hours per week for a 15-week duration. Ultimately, it is the student's responsibility to arrange his or her schedule with the organization providing the practicum in accordance with the requirements of the program.
PURPOSE
The practicum should be experiential and integrative and allow students to demonstrate and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as management competencies in applied, experiential settings. This practical learning experience is an important component of the curriculum and will require students to draw upon, apply and synthesize knowledge, and skills covered throughout the program of study and are required for all enrolled students.
REQUIRED INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE GOALS
The students shall:
THE STUDENT'S ROLE IN SECURING AN INTERNSHIP
Once the HIM1260, HIM2012, and HIM2512 courses are successfully completed, the student is ready to register for the internship. Past experience has demonstrated that the most effective practicum is one selected by the students themselves based on their career interests. The faculty may participate as a facilitator in this process. Students should meet with their Academic Advisors to begin to identify potential preceptors three to six months prior to the start of the practicum. Generally, students may not complete a practicum in their place of employment. Exceptions to this rule may be approved on a case-by-case basis by the Associate Dean, and the following conditions must be met:
Students are required to complete a background check and drug screening prior to completing a practicum in a healthcare facility. The cost of the background check and screenings is the responsibility of the student.
As a general rule, the preceptor and the student should have a learning agreement no later than two weeks after the start of the semester. The student shall also provide the name, position, site, and overview of the preceptor. This information is to be provided to the faculty by email or hand-delivered. Failure to meet the two-week time frame may delay the completion of the practicum and require the student to receive an incomplete or failing grade for the course. Further, a grade will not be provided if these requirements are not met.
Students should meet with their assigned academic advisor prior to the last academic semester to register for HSA2810 and arrange an appropriate practicum placement for the following term.
COMPLETING THE INTERNSHIP
Securing the practicum is just the first step. Completing the practicum experience, particularly, achieving the goals of the learning contract will be facilitated by the student's focused efforts and involvement.
THE STUDENT'S ROLE
Proactive participation in the assigned internship activities requires the student to be on site for the agreed-upon hours and actively engaged in assigned activities, meetings, and project(s). The student will also complete a satisfactory written journal by the designated deadline. The journal will include practicum duties performed, learning outcomes, and an overview of the experience. A final grade will be given upon successful completion of all documents. All documents should be provided to the office by the last week of the semester to allow enough time for review. All incomplete assignments will receive an "I" or Incomplete and will be required to complete the practicum requirements the following semester.
