LOEP (ACCUPLACER ESL)

The Broward College LOEP (ACCUPLACER ESL) is a multiple-choice format (except for writing sample). Students taking this test are placed into classes according to their skill level. There's no time limit (except for writing sample). Questions are presented based on individual's skill level. The response to each question drives the difficulty level of the next question. It's important to give each question as much thought as possible before selecting an answer.

The scaled score range for the ESL Reading Skills and ESL Listening tests is 20-120. These two sections of the LOEP (ACCUPLACER ESL) are adaptive. This means that the questions are chosen for you on the basis of your answers to previous questions. This technique selects just the right questions for your ability level. Because the test works this way, you must answer every question in the order it is given. You can change your answer to a particular question before moving on to the next question, but you cannot leave a question out or come back to it later to change your answer. If you do not know the answer to a question, try to eliminate one or more of the choices. Then pick from the remaining choices.

LOEP test scores expire after 1 one year if a student has never registered for EAP classes. Students must retest* on the LOEP. 
*There is a fee for all retest attempts. 

The average time to complete all three sections in one sitting is approximately 2 1/2 hours. 
  • First Attempt: all sections must be completed in one sitting
  • Retest Attempt: one or more sections may be taken in a sitting

Course placement options on the LOEP (ACCUPLACER ESL):

LOEP Placement Notes:

  • English proficiency placement testing requirements can be found in the College Catalog. 
  • Placement is determined by skill level, student status, and other factors. 
  • Students are strongly encouraged to meet with an advisor to discuss the distinction between the Associate of Science (A.S.)* and Associate of Arts (A.A.) to decide which degree can fit with the major they plan to pursue at the College and then create a personalized EAP educational plan.
    • *EAP students who declare an Associate of Science (A.S.) degree may not have financial aid coverage for EAP1000 level courses.

There are 3 sections to the BC LOEP (ACCUPLACER ESL):

  • WritePlacer ESL - Writing Sample
    • Students will be given a random writing prompt which requires students to type a response of 300-600 words. The writing sample is graded by a faculty reader. 
    • Timed at 1 hour.
  • ESL Reading Skills - Practice Sample Questions
    • The test, comprised of 20 questions, measures a student's ability to read English through the comprehension of short passages.
    • Untimed
  • ESL Listening - Practice Sample Questions
    • The test is comprised of 20 questions, measures the student's ability to listen to and understand one or more people speaking in English.
    • Untimed
Note: BC administers a LOEP test sequence specifically designed for BC students. It may differ from the LOEP version required by another institution. Check with your institution about the specific LOEP test sequence they require.

Retesting Policy

Students are entitled to retest no more than one (1) time provided it is within 12 months of the initial test date.
  • Students must wait a minimum of 1 day to retest after their initial attempt. 
  • Time restarts for LOEP testing eligibility one year after the initial test date, not the retest date.
  • Under certain circumstances, students may be eligible for additional retesting within a 12-month period with a recommendation from an Associate Dean of EAP.
Students with LOEP placement test scores that are more than one year old and who have never registered for classes are required to retest.

*The LOEP test administered at BC may differ from the LOEP test offered at other institutions.

Test Preparation

Remote Testing

​Students needing to take the LOEP (ACCUPLACER ESL)  who live outside of the South Florida area have the option to request remote placement testing accommodations. Students must follow these steps:
  • Students must have a BC ID # prior to making the requesting.
  • All requests must be approved by the Institutional Test Administrator (ITA) (mwebb@broward.edu) or designee prior to taking the test.
  • Requests must be received at least 10 business days prior to the preferred test date.
  • Student must locate a proctor in your geographic area at a postsecondary test center or for those serving in the military or foreign services, a military /government educational facility.
  • Students are responsible for all remote related proctoring fees as well as any BC testing fees.
