Our impact on the environment is of critical concern in the 21st century. Coral reefs are disappearing around the world at astonishing rates; the global economy and developing countries have increased levels of pollution worldwide; and various terrestrial and marine animals have already vanished from the face of the earth due to human activities. Here at home, our own Everglades face extinction as development continues to encroach westward.
With the training and instruction Broward College’s Environmental Science Technology program offers, you can play a major role in saving our distressed natural resources. You have the power to change the course of disastrous events occurring on a global scale—and it all begins here.
Broward College’s Environmental Science Technology program utilizes state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities to train you for lab and field work. Project-based learning provides hands-on research activities that complement the type of research you will be doing as an environmental science technician. More and more organizations, in the private and public sectors, are focusing on “green operations” and environmental sustainability. As a result, the job outlook for environmental science technicians is expected to grow much faster than average nationwide, with a 12 percent increase in job growth through 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employ Florida Marketplace reports that salaries for environmental technicians in Florida begin at $12 an hour with average salaries topping off at $16 to $18 an hour.

Dr. David Serrano
Dr. Serrano is a graduate of the University of Miami, where he received his BS in Biology and Chemistry, and the University of Florida, where we was awarded a master’s and doctoral degree in Entomology. He has worked on natural area monitoring and restoration at Everglades National Park and the Florida State Park System. Dr. Serrano has also done contract work for the USDA in order to help protect American agriculture from exotic pests and diseases.
