About this Test

The Broward College ACCUPLACER ESL (LOEP) is an adaptive test and delivered in a multiple-choice format (except for WritePlacer ESL essay). Students taking this test are placed into EAP classes according to their skill level in each subtest area. The ACCUPLACER ESL (LOEP) is considered the primary local EAP Placement Test at Broward College.

Adaptive Test: This means that the questions are chosen for you based on your answers to previous questions. This technique selects just the right questions for your ability level. Because the test works this way, you must answer every question in the order it is given. You can change your answer to a particular question before moving on to the next question, but you cannot leave a question out or come back to it later to change your answer. If you do not know the answer to a question, try to eliminate one or more of the choices. Then pick from the remaining choices.

Who must test?

Degree-seeking students who do not meet the criteria for:

  • Demonstration of Readiness for College-Level Communication and Computation Exemption and
  • English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Exemption

Based on Florida State Statute 1008.30, Florida State Rule 6A-10.0315, Broward College Policy 6Hx2-5.14, and Broward College Procedure A6Hx2-5.14, students who are non-exempt are required to demonstrate of placement.

A student who is exempt and not required to be assessed for readiness may opt to be assessed and enrolled in developmental education instruction, and the college shall provide such assessment and instruction upon the student’s request.

  • Student places at the Exempt level in all 4 ACCUPLACER ESL (LEOP) subtest areas (ESL Listening, ESL Reading Skills, WritePlacer ESL, and ESL Language Use) of an EAP Placement Test. (Note: Not all EAP Placement Tests will
allow a student to place at the Exempt level.)

A student who is exempt and not required to be assessed for readiness may opt to be assessed and enrolled in developmental education instruction, and the college shall provide such assessment and request.
