Based on Florida State Statute 1008.30, Florida State Rule 6A-10.0315, Broward College Policy 6Hx2-5.14, and Broward College Procedure A6Hx2-5.14, *degree-seeking students must Demonstrate Readiness for College-Level Communication and Computation into the appropriate level of reading, writing, and mathematics courses. Various placement methods are available, including common placement tests, which are not 'Pass' or 'Fail' assessments. They are used to determine the best academic starting point for students to be successful in college. Exemption and placement method information can be found in the sections below. Placement methods are broken into two categories; Native English Speakers and Non-Native English Speakers. Those categorized as non-native English speakers will demonstrate placement in English and reading using an approved EAP Placement Test. 

*A student enrolled in a Technical Certificate or Applied Technology Diploma program that contains courses requiring college-level placement in reading, writing, and/or mathematics will be required to demonstrate placement using one of the options below in this section.

Exempt and Non-Exempt

There are two (2) categories all students (except dual enrollment and college academy) will fall into related to demonstration of readiness for college-level communication and computation:

  • Exempt = No need to demonstrate placement
    • A student who entered 9th grade in a Florida public school in the 2003-2004 school year, or any year thereafter, and earned a standard high school diploma from a Florida public high school. or 
    • A student who is serving as an active duty member of any branch of the United States Armed Forces. 
  • Non-Exempt = Must demonstrate placement
    • A student that does not meet one of the exemption criteria above.

 

Native and Non-Native English Speakers

Non-Exempt Placement Methods are broken into two categories based on the students native language.

  • Native English Speakers (Non-*EAP)
    • Students whose native language is English.
  • Non-Native English Speakers (*EAP)
    • Students whose native language is other than English and who did not complete two (2)
      years of regular high school English in the United States or in an American high school
      abroad accredited in the United States.
    • Students with expired EAP Placement Test scores.
    • Students who earned a GED, HiSET, or TASC that was taken in Spanish.

*EAP is the English for Academic Purposes program. The program offers English language courses that are designed to prepare non-native English-speaking speakers for a degree program at BC. The EAP program offers courses in three main skill areas: Reading; Grammar and Writing; and Listening and Speaking.
