Broward College Testing and Assessment Centers offers several credit-by-exam options. Credit-by-Exams are a great way for students to save time, money, and accelerate their education. 

Students who earn credits through Credit-by-Exam:

Save Money, Save Time, Persist Longer, and Earn a Degree

  • On average while attaining their degree, students:
    • save between $1,222.00 and $3,048.00 
    • save an average of 2.5 to 13.9 months
    • take an additional 19 more credit hours
    • graduation rate is nearly 22% higher

CLEP

The College Board’s College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) has been a widely trusted credit-by-examination program for over 50 years, accepted by 2,900 colleges and universities and administered in more than 1,800 test centers. This program allows students from a wide range of ages and backgrounds to demonstrate their mastery of introductory college-level material and earn college credit. Students can earn credit for what they already know by getting qualifying scores on most CLEP examinations. Effective July 1, 2022, CLEP exams will be kept by College Board for 10 years. The new policy applies to any CLEP exams scored after this date. Students who took CLEP exams prior to the new policy taking effect on July 1, 2022 can still contact CLEP Services to request scores for exams taken up to 20 years ago.

Passing a specific CLEP exam for Competency Requirements:

  • Note: the CLEP Exam Fee typically increases a few dollars every year on July 1st.
Exam Length

CLEP exams range from 90 to 120 minutes in length.

(Total test time will include at least 30 additional minutes for test setup and completion.)
Retest Policy

3 months

  • If you retake an exam within the three-month period, your administration will be considered invalid, your score will be canceled and any test fees will be forfeited.
  • DANTES-funded military examinees: DANTES does not fund retesting on previously funded CLEP exams. However, service members may personally fund a retest after waiting three months.
DANTES Funding for Military

Yes

  • All current and former Broward College students who are active duty or veterans will have the CLEP proctoring fee waived for ALL test attempts! (Must have a BC student ID number)
    • Active duty students must show their military ID at the time of check-in.
    • Veterans must have their VA advisor contact the Testing and Assessment Center prior to check-in for the exam.
  • Non-Broward College active duty examinees who are eligible first time military exam candidates will not only have their exam fee funded by DANTES, but will also have their proctoring fee waived at the Testing Center by DANTES.
    • Non-Broward College veterans may be eligible for reimbursement from the VA.

DSST

The DSST (DANTES Subject Standardized Tests) has been a widely trusted credit-by-examination program for nearly 50 years, accepted by over 1,900 colleges and universities, and administered in more than 1,200 test centers. This program allows students from a wide range of ages and backgrounds to demonstrate their mastery of introductory college-level material and earn college credit. Students can earn credit for what they already know by getting qualifying scores on most DSST examinations.   • All test takers are eligible to retest after a 30 day wait period. NOTE: For eligible military students, DANTES only funds the first attempt to pass an exam; any subsequent attempts to pass a failed exam will be the test takers’ responsibility.

  1. Schedule your exam at a Broward College Testing and Assessment Center
    • Choose Your Location:
    • Steps to Register
      • Step 1 = Broward College Student
      • Step 2 = Credit for Prior Learning
      • Step 3 = DSST List of Exams
      • Step 4 = Select the exam you wish to take (Be sure to check with your advisor to make sure the exam awards the correct course credit at Broward College)
      • Step 5 = Choose an alternate location at a preferred campus
      • Steps 6-9 = Choose a date, time, and complete all demographic and test questions as well as agree to all acknowledgements.
      • Add to Cart, Pay Fee, and Checkout
  2. DSST Exam Registration and payment is completed at the testing center within the testing platform on the day of the exam.
    • Payment must be by credit card (Mastercard, Visa, and American Express Only) paid to DSST
