Program Details

Aviation Operations & Airport Operations Management

Airport operations management and aviation operations are two degrees designed to teach you about a wide variety of staff, operational, management, or administrative positions in the field of aviation. Aviation Operations offers a broad background in the aviation industry, while Airport Operations focuses mainly on the daily administrative tasks involved in running an airport.

You can practice real-world experience and day-to-day activities in the field while learning the certification requirements of international airports. There are two intensive internships available to prepare you with real-world experience:

  • Miami International Airport (MIA)
  • Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL)

Air Traffic Control

One of the newest programs at Broward College, the Air Traffic Control A.S. was developed by industry air traffic operators and teaches you basic air traffic control. The program follows FAA standards for knowledge and skills to ensure your success in airport towers across the country. Upon completion of BC's program and successfully passing the Air Traffic Selection and Training Aptitude Test (AT-SAT), you may qualify for the FAA Academy.

Professional Pilot Technology

Our pilot program offers a comprehensive education if you want to become a pilot for commercial airlines. All flight certificates required to put you in the pilot's seat are included in the curriculum. You will be trained by FAA-certified flight instructors on state-of-the-art flight simulators.

Our training programs are conducted in partnership with Phoenix East Aviation and will lead to the following FAA flight certificates:

  • Private Pilot
  • Instrument Rating
  • Commercial Pilot
  • Multi-Engine Rating
  • Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)
  • Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII)

The complete program is also available online for maximum flexibility.

Avionics Vocational Certificate

Our certificate program in Avionics will teach you to repair and maintain components and systems used for aircraft navigation such as:

  • Radio communications
  • Weather radar systems
  • Computers that control flight, engine, and other primary functions

Aviation Maintenance Management

The Aviation Maintenance program gives you the confidence to become a highly qualified technician in the competitive marketplace of aviation maintenance. As a graduate of the program, you will be qualified for any entry-level position. By the time you're done, you will have a thorough working knowledge of all basic structural design and system functions of aircraft.

Aircraft Airframe Mechanics Certificate

The Airframe Maintenance Mechanics certificate program leads to the Federal Aviation Administration airframe certificate. The course of study complies with FAR Part 147 and the program is FAA certified.

Completion of the certificate programs may convert into college credit (30 credits per license) toward an Associate of Science degree in Aviation Maintenance Management.

This program is offered in two 400-hour blocks and requires special permission before registration.

Aircraft Powerplant Mechanics Certificate

The Powerplant Maintenance Mechanics certificate program leads to the Federal Aviation Administration powerplant certificate. The course of study complies with FAR Part 147 and the program is FAA certified.

Completion of the certificate programs may convert into college credit (30 credits per license) toward an Associate of Science degree in Aviation Maintenance Management.

This program is offered in two 400-hour blocks and requires special permission before registration.

Search aviation jobs

One of the best aspects for those interested in a career in aviation is the field's flexibility. There's a niche for everyone.

There are specific requirements for certain programs like Air Traffic Control and the Professional Pilot program.

The requirements for Air Traffic Controllers are:

  • Must have completed a 4-year degree or combination of college and work experience
  • Must be a United States citizen at the time of employment
  • Pass a class II medical examination for ATCS
  • Pass a security investigation
  • In most cases, not have reached the age of 31
  • Pass the FAA pre-employment test (AT-SAT) with a minimum score of 70
  • Pass a Biographical Questionnaire
  • Speak English clearly
  • Complete an interview and psychological test

The requirements for Avionics applications are:

  • Previous electronics training OR
  • Previous documented avionics industry work experience OR
  • Completion of Airframe and Powerplant training or FAA licenses
  • Must have the Program Manager's approval

The Professional Pilot program also has certain requirements for admission, such as:

  • Medical. Bring a minimum of a third-class medical examination certificate. It is recommended, however, that flight students receive at least a second-class medical, as this is the minimum level needed to fly for hire. The first class is the level required to fly for the airlines. Go to the FAA website to find a doctor near you.
  • TSA. Non-US citizens are required to fill out an application with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) prior to flight training. Students will not be allowed to fly until clearance is provided. MAY TAKE UP TO 4 WEEKS FOR CLEARANCE.
  • Flight Account. Open a flight account at BC cashiers office with a minimum $3500 initial deposit.
  • Loan. If requesting a student loan, the student must complete an Aviation Enrollment Plan.
Aircraft Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) students along with Aviation Maintenance students should be:
  • Repair-minded
  • Detail-oriented
  • Willing to learn complex technical systems
  • Comfortable working in the heat and humidity

Aviation Operations students should exhibit the following qualities before applying:

  • Detail-oriented
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Able to work efficiently yet accurately
  • Level-headed and calm under pressure

Faculty members and staff in our Aviation programs include graduates from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Saint Mary's College in California, and Florida Atlantic University, in addition to Broward College. Three faculty members have served our country in the military as Air Force personnel. Adjunct and full-time faculty are certified technicians and licensed pilots with years of experience. They have worked for such commercial airlines as United Airlines, Eastern Airlines, Discovery Airways, British Airways, and Midway Airlines. Many faculty and staff members are also award winners in the field of aviation.

All of our associate degree programs require a two-year commitment. Completion times vary, depending on whether you enroll as a full-time student or a part-time student and which program you choose to follow. The blended Avionics certificate requires 720 clock hours. The Airframe and Powerplant certificates require 1,200 clock hours each.

Accreditation

Broward College SACSCOC Accreditation Statement

Broward College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in Applied Science, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Applied Science degrees.  Broward College also may offer credentials such as certificates and diplomas at approved degree levels. Additional Program Certifications

The Aircraft Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics Certificates are both certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the Avionics Certificate is certified by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The Professional Pilot Technology program is a Federal Aviation Administration Part 141 program.

The Air Traffic Control program is a partner in the Federal Aviation Administration's Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI).
